South Carolina's weather is humid and subtropical, with long, hot summers and short, mild winters. Conditions here are the result of low elevations (overall), the warm Gulf Stream waters, and the Appalachian Mountains, which in winter help to screen out cold air from the interior of the United States. January is the coldest month, with average high temperatures ranging from 32 degrees in the northwest, to 55 degrees central and coastal. July is the warmest month, with average temperatures ranging from 70 degrees in the northwest, to 92 degrees central and coastal. Annual precipitation (mostly spring and summer rains) averages near 50 inches, with slightly higher amounts and some snow in the mountains and upper Piedmont.
