Climate :

Ordinarily, Louisiana's summers are beastly hot and winters are mild. The average temperature range for the northern part of the state is 38-60 F/3-16 C in winter and 70-95 F/21-35 C in summer. Winter in the southern portion runs 44-67 F/7-19 C, with summer at 70-95 F/21-35 C. It does get even hotter, and humidity can make that heat seem much, much worse. (If you can stand the heat, however, you might be rewarded with special rates at some hotels and attractions.) Spring and fall offer a pleasant range of temperatures -- 50-78 F/10-26 C. If you visit in the summer, avoid the extreme midday temperatures by doing most of your outdoor sightseeing during the morning and evening hours. Reserve midafternoon for climate-controlled museums, long siestas or leisurely lunches in dark restaurants or taverns. Because humidity is usually high, be sure your car has air-conditioning. Hurricanes occasionally appear out of the Gulf of Mexico July-October. While it's unlikely that visitors will be affected, it's still advisable to check weather forecasts during hurricane watches, especially if you're traveling in coastal areas. Most attractions are open year-round. Swimmers will find Gulf water temperatures at 84 F/28 C in August. The February water temperature of 64 F/16 C might be a bit too bracing for some.
